SA: New terror laws need change, says Attorney-General
Attorney-General DARYL WILLIAMS says Australia's new terrorism laws don't allow terroristgroups to be properly identified.
Mr WILLIAMS says that under the laws passed earlier this year, groups can only be identifiedas terrorist organisations in Australia if they've first been recognised as such by theUN Security Council.
However, Mr WILLIAMS told a World Jurist Association congress in Adelaide that theUN list is limited and doesn't represent all threats to Australia.
He says the government believes the requirement for UN listing is unnecessary and canimpede Australia's ability to respond quickly to threats.
Mr WILLIAMS says he's unaware of any other country that is hindered by only recognisingUN listed groups as terrorist organisations.
He says the government has introduced amendments into parliament to remove the requirementfor UN listing.
