FED:Whaling dispute raises questions of law
An Australian expert has poured cold water on Greens and opposition suggestions the
federal government should intercept Japanese whaling ships and their support ships in
Australian waters after three Australians climbed on board and became prisoners.
International law expert TIM STEPHENS says the country's so-called territorial sea
extends just 12 nautical miles from the coastline, the so-called contiguous zone extends
up to 24 nautical miles and the exclusive economic zone up to 200 nautical miles from
the coast.
