MANDELA GOES HOME A HERO THOUSANDS CHEER AS HE ATTACKS APARTHEID SYSTEM.(Main)

Nelson Mandela returned to a hero's welcome in his hometown today and urged throngs of cheering supporters to continue their fight against apartheid, which put them in "ghettos like Soweto."

"Today my return to Soweto fills my heart with joy," Mandela told an ecstatic but orderly crowd of 120,000 people in a huge soccer stadium, many of whom had never seen the man they revere as their leader.

"At the same time, I have a deep sadness that you are still suffering under an unjust system.

"Our people need proper housing, not ghettos like Soweto," he told the crowd, to a rising cheer. The sprawling black township of 2.5 million people lies just outside Johannesburg and has been a focus of the anti- apartheid movement.

Mandela, whose family still has a small home in Soweto, deplored the poverty and suffering endured by many in the township. He …
