NSW: Fire damages top level of inner city building

Fire has damaged the top level of a building and caused the evacuation of about a dozen
people in inner-city Sydney.

The fire brigade says firefighters were called to the blaze on a floor above a Cash
and Carry store in Thomas Street, Ultimo, around 12.15pm (AEDT).

Spokesman IAN KRIMMER says the fire took hold of the building's third level warehouse area.

About a dozen people were evacuated from the building, while other surrounding buildings
were placed on standby.

Mr KRIMMER says it took 30 firefighters from six surrounding fire stations about half
an hour to bring the blaze under control.

He says the fire, which has been restricted to the top level of the building, will
be extinguished shortly.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.
