Fed: Oil companies were aware of investigation: Independents
Independent petrol station operators claim the oil companies raided by the competitionwatchdog knew they were under investigation -- and had time to destroy any incriminatingevidence.
Petroleum Marketers' Association of Australia spokesman PAUL ANDRONICOU says whilehe welcomes the raids, he doubts the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission willfind anything of consequence.
He says after the ACCC placed newspaper ads in an effort to contact a whistleblower, the oil companies knew someone was dobbing them in from the inside.
And he says they required half a day's notice before they had to let the ACCC into their offices.
Mr ANDRONICOU, who owns the Fast Fuel petrol station in Wantirna in Melbourne, hasbeen lobbying the government for two years to change the onus of proof in the Trade PracticesAct on to the oil companies.
He was among a number of independent service stations that offered cheap fuel duringthe last federal election to highlight alleged collusion within the major oil companies.
