Qld: Steam train to tour regions for Qld anniversary
BRISBANE, April 13 AAP - Queensland will revisit the glory of the age of steam to celebrate
the state's 150th birthday.
A steam train will leave Brisbane's Roma Street Station on Tuesday on a five-month
journey around the state, from Wallangarra on the NSW border to Cairns in the far north
and Quilpie in the west.
It will leave Brisbane at 9.30am (AEST), bound for the old gold mining town of Gympie
where it will be welcomed in a community celebration.
Queensland was separated from the colony of NSW in 1859.
Railways and their steam locomotives did much to develop the state from a fledgling
colony to a prosperous member of the Commonwealth.
Communities in 30 different centres will host the Q150 Steam Train on its six separate
journeys across Queensland.
The train will travel from Gympie to Maryborough, Bundaberg and Gladstone before arriving
in Rockhampton at 3pm on Sunday.
From the central Queensland city, the Q150 train will then steam west to Winton on April 28.
